When splints are cast, a sock (identical to a support bandage) is placed on the leg which is marked, in this case, with a smiley face! This shows the position of the ankle. The mark transfers to the cast where the padding will need to go.

Keisha would only settle when I gave her my bottle of Dr Pepper. Her screams could be heard right down the corridor. (The procedure is not painful, I just shouldn't have let her see the bottle!).

A  rubber cutting guide (can also be metal or plastic) is placed along the shin and the cast is wrapped over it. The cast foot is then held in the correct position until the plaster is firm.

The guide has a ridge along the centre for the blade and the cast is cut away before it becomes rigid

The same procedure is applied for the other leg. Keisha's new splints will be ready a week after the casting
